Fundraiser for Westhampton Library

Matt Roncone’s youth class had a successful fundraiser for the Westhampton Public Library on Saturday, March 16, 2013. Parents and students made baked goods and staffed the event, held at the Westhampton Landfill (the unsung social hub of the region on a Saturday morning!), and Pierce Brothers Coffee donated their Fogbuster blend and hot cocoa.

The event raised some $350 for the library and was used to buy these books:

The Art of War Sun Tzu
The Art of Peace Morihei Ueshiba
Zen in the Martial Arts Joe Hyams
The Father of Judo Brian N. Watson
Tao-Te-Ching Lao Tzu
Autumn Lightning Dave Lowry
Karate-Do:  My Way of Life Gichin Funakoshi
Sword and Brush Dave Lowry
The Overlook Martial Arts Reader Randy F. Nelson
The Anatomy of Martial Arts Norman Link
Moving Toward Stillness Dave Lowry
Jingwu:  The School that Transformed Kung Fu Brian Kennedy
Chronicles of Tao Ming-dao Deng
Giving Up the Gun Noel Perrin
Traditions Dave Lowry
Taekwondo Spirit and Practice Richard Chun
Myths and Legends of the Martial Arts Peter Lewis
The Life of Milarepa Lobsang Lhalungpa
Tao of Jeet Kune Do Bruce Lee
Tae Kwon Do:  The Korean Martial Art Richard Chun
The Way of the Warrior Howard Reid
The Book of Five Rings Miyamoto Musashi
American Shaolin Matthew Polly
The Three Ninja Pigs Corey Rosen Schwartz

I’ve already put my name on the wait list for The Three Ninja Pigs and think some of the other books look interesting as well.

Congratulations to Matt Roncone and all the students in his class for a good idea, brilliantly executed. This event is good for our school and its community, and it has made twenty-four worthwhile martial arts books available to the public, who otherwise might not have sought them out or had the opportunity to read them.

(Savvy reading group attendees may note that some of these volumes will be used in future discussions. This means the Westhampton Public Library will be another good place to look for many upcoming River Valley Tae Kwon Do reading group selections.)
